Fernet – A Classic Cocktail Enhancer

A favorite of craft cocktail makers, fernet is an aromatic spirit that features a blend of herbs including myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom, aloe and saffron. The flavor is complex – herbal and bitter – yet balanced. The most popular brand, Fernet-Branca, was created in Italy in 1845 and was marketed as a tonic for relief from ailments such as fever, worms and cholera. At 39% alcohol by volume, U.S. pharmacy sales of Fernet-Branca spiked in 1919 after the passage of prohibition laws.
