In an effort to raise awareness of the arts in the Door County community, the Francis Hardy Center for the Arts (FHCA) is encouraging individuals to contribute to the Community Mosaic Project. Anyone is invited to participate in the new arts initiative that involves the creation of a large mosaic using 350 6-inch by 6-inch artworks. The mosaic will be on display at the Francis Hardy Gallery from July 18 – Sept. 1.

The FHCA will provide participants with one 6-inch by 6-inch blank canvas to create a work of art. There are no restrictions regarding subject matter or the kinds of materials one can use to make the art, except that it must be appropriate for display at the gallery, created using the 6-inch by 6-inch canvas supplied and must not exceed the 6-inch by 6-inch dimension. In addition to the canvas, participants will receive a 4-inch by 6-inch note card to include the how and why of the work. Each statement will be included with the finished piece of artwork.

For individuals new to the art-making process, a series of free workshops with professional artists will give an extra helping hand and provide supplies as well as the opportunity to get assistance from experienced artists. The first session will be held on Thursday, May 22 from 1 – 4 pm in the Gathering Room at Scandia Village in Sister Bay. This is a free workshop and is open to the general public but reservations are required. Please call 920.854.2210 to reserve a space. Additional free workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, June 3 from 1 – 4 pm at the Northern Door YMCA; Wednesday, June 18 from 1 – 4 pm at the Miller Art Museum Annex Building in Sturgeon Bay; and Thursday, June 26 from 1 – 4 pm at the Francis Hardy Gallery in Ephraim. There is no cost to participate.

For individuals who don’t need instruction but would like to participate, canvases are now available through the FHCA. Completed artworks are due back by Monday, June 30.
