First Day Hikes Held at Pen Park and Whitefish Dunes

Whitefish Dunes State Park and Peninsula State Park are each hosting a First Day Hike on Jan. 1 to start the New Year right.

Peninsula State Park First Day hikers will meet at the Weborg picnic shelter, at 10 am. They will walk an easy one to three mile route along the Sunset Bike Trail and Weborg Marsh. During the hike, the hike leader will help members of the group to identify a variety of bird species. The event will conclude about noon, after hikers have warmed up in the shelter with hot chocolate and cookies.

Children are welcome, with adult supervision, but pets are not allowed. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle and dress for the weather, with hiking boots or snowshoes. A state park vehicle sticker is required. For cancellation information, call 920.868.3258, or refer to peninsulafriends.org.

Whitefish Dunes State Park will also celebrate the New Year with a hike of exploration. Enjoy the forested dunes and rocky shores with the naturalist. Dress for the weather, and bring hiking boots or snowshoes. Hot beverages will be provided at the Nature Center afterwards. Meet at 2 pm in the nature center for this relaxing hike of discovery.
