Gallery of the Door County Art League Features Sally Berner and Gary Orthober

The Gallery of the Door County Art League, located in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek, will feature two artists each week of the season. Woodcarver Gary Orthober and oil painter Sally Berner will be featured the week of June 14.

Orthober, who began carving wood seriously after he retired in 2004, says he had tinkered with it for many years but never really had the time to do it right. He primarily uses northern basswood for all the figures he paints, and for his stylized figures Orthober uses a variety of hardwoods, mostly local, such as cherry, walnut, butternut, maple, and birch. Orthober will demonstrate at the gallery on Friday, June 19.

Berner, who has been painting with oils for 23 years, appreciates the versatility and buttery consistency of the paints. The pure pigment can be glazed in thin layers for glowing, transparent color and can be applied thickly for light-catching highlights. Animals are her main subject matter, so she takes many photographs of dogs, cows, horses, and wildlife in hopes of catching that special light and pose. Berner plans to demonstrate at the gallery on Saturday, June 20.

All types of original art – produced by about 40 Door County Art League members – is on display and available for sale at the gallery, which is open 10 am – 5 pm daily. A reception is planned for the last Saturday of each month from 3 – 5 pm.
