Gibraltar Newspaper Wins Eight Awards

Gibraltar’s student newspaper, the Viking Voice, was recognized with eight awards in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The Viking Voice was launched just two years ago, but advisor Lauren Bremer said the recognition didn’t surprise her.

“These students are so full of creativity, things to say, and talent,” Bremer said. “So it’s not surprising, but it’s gratifying that there is so much interest from the students.”

Twenty-five students regularly contribute to the paper. Senior Andrew Phillips received three awards and shared another, including first award for Photography, Graphics and Feature Writing. Phillips shared a third award for Feature Writing with fellow senior Sam Kahr.

Junior Lilli Nelson earned a Second Award and an Honorable Mention award for film reviews, and Julia Spellman earned a Second Award for Sports Reporting. Junior Jeffrey Schneider earned an honorable mention award for Feature Writing.

The awards were selected by leaders in the Wisconsin newspaper industry.

“The positive feedback from community and students is amazing, but it’s especially rewarding to be acknowledged by a newspaper organization,” Bremer said. “With the efforts and hours that the students put into it they are certainly deserving.”
