Going Garbage & Door Property Owners Team Up for
Second-Annual Environmental Speaker Series

Going Garbage & Recycling Inc (GGRI) and Door Property Owners, Inc (DPO) are partnering to bring back the Environmental Speaker Series for 2009. Introduced in 2008 by Going Garbage, the series was well received and garnered commendation from the Village of Sister Bay.

“We created the Speaker Series to bring awareness to ‘hot’ issues that currently affect our community or may impact us in the future,” says Christi Decker, who co-owns Going Garbage with her husband Jeff Johnson.

The collaboration for this year’s series was a natural fit according to Donna Lash, President of DPO.

“Our organization’s mission is to provide a forum to discuss land use issues as well as to support the conservation of the Door Peninsula’s natural, scenic, cultural and aesthetic resources,” says Lash.

The first program in the five lecture series is called “Green Share,” which will take place at Base Camp Coffee Shop on Thursday, March 12 at 7 pm. Community members are encouraged to bring their favorite environmental Web sites, blogs, articles of interest, and more. There will be Internet access, a computer, and a large screen available so everyone attending is able to see the items being discussed.

The April program will feature Will Christianson of Travel Green Wisconsin and Francis Xavier of Focus on Energy. This program will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, April 16.

Zero Waste is the topic of May’s program, which will be presented by Steve Brachman, a Waste Reduction Specialist with the University of Wisconsin Extension’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center. This program will be held on Thursday, May 14 at 7 pm at Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay.

Crossroads at Big Creek will also be the site of June’s program, which is devoted to the subject of Rain Gardens and will be presented by Chad Cook, Basin Educator with the UW-Extension in Oshkosh, and Greg Coulthurst, Conservationist for Door County Soil and Water. This program will be held on Thursday, June 11 at 7 pm.

The series will wrap up on Wednesday, July 15 at 7 pm at the Sister Bay Fire Station. Bob Bultman, who has been Coordinator for the Door County Invasive Species Team for the past two years, will be speaking about Invasive Species and the Door County Property Owner.
