Grant Thomas Retiring as County’s Corporation Counsel

Grant Thomas will retire after serving as corporation counsel for the County of Door since 1997. Thomas gave notice of his pending retirement in January, and the county began searching for a replacement. The top candidate has since been selected and will meet board members during a special meeting on Monday, May 2, 10 am.

There’s no firm date for Thomas’ departure – he had given a range of July 1, 2022 through July 1, 2023 – even after the new corporation counsel is hired. Thomas said he anticipated he’d be wrapping up his work and training the new hire until 2023.

As the in-house attorney for the County of Door, the corporation counsel prosecutes and defends all civil actions on behalf of the county. Thomas has shaped the position as Door County’s first in-house corporation counsel; prior to that, the county contracted with local attorneys to perform the service.
