JazzKnits Classes Announced

Knitting designer and teacher Jane Barnard announces a series of “JazzKnits” classes slated for May 21–23 in Ephraim. Barnard’s approach is not to slavishly follow a pattern, but rather, an improvisational technique to promote individual creativity.

Like a jazz musician improvising on a simple melody, JazzKnits students learn easy but exciting variations on a basic pattern, creating a garment unique to the knitter. Barnard also offers one-of-a-kind designer yarn kits for sale. She taught two successful classes at The Clearing in early 2008, and returns with two offerings for spring.

• Spring Class I – JazzKnits Elegant Wrap: Summer Edition!

A six-hour class, held May 21 – 22 from 9 – 12 am, that covers how to create an elegant, airy wrap for cool summer nights. With many variations on a simple wrap/shrug/shawl this class fosters knitters’ creativity.

Level: Advanced beginner (must know knit, purl, cast on/off.).

Cost: $20 (plus $4 pattern for new students).

Location: Ephraim (directions provided upon registration).

• Spring Class 2 – JazzKnits Improvisations, or, What Do I Do NOW?

A six-hour class, held May 22 – 23 from 1:30 – 4:30 pm, this class provides tips and techniques for jazzing up knits with embellishments and easy-but-elegant variations. The class covers how to finish a current project, jazz it up, or get out of trouble using nifty shortcuts.

Level: Advanced beginner though experienced.

Cost: $18.

Location: Ephraim (directions provided upon registration).
