Koenke Redefines the Wisconsin Landscape

“Garbage Day in the Alley” by Julie Koenke.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Julie Koenke was uniquely aware of issues of segregation, race, class and culture at an early age. Her experiences led her to develop an interest in community work, education and youth development. These interests, coupled with a passion for creating visual art, prompted Koenke to a post-secondary education in the visual arts and public education.

Currently a Madison resident, Koenke works for the Madison Metropolitan School District overseeing a college readiness program for first generation college students.

“It is through my professional life as a youth worker and school district employee that I have experienced the tensions that occur in our communities,” said Koenke. “The themes of my artwork are rooted and shaped by my professional experiences as I work to navigate the ever-changing landscape of educational politics and policies.”

The creation of visual art plays an important role in Koenke’s life. She has painted public murals in Madison and Reedsburg, Wisconsin, and has exhibited artwork throughout Wisconsin.

Koenke’s work will be displayed at The Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace throughout August. The Flying Pig, open daily 10 am to 5 pm, is located at N6975 Highway 42, two miles south Algoma.
