Letter to the Editor: Vote ‘Yes’ for School Referendums

The League of Women Voters of Door County urges residents of both the Southern Door and Washington Island School Districts to support educational programs in the school referendum vote on April 4.

The elementary, middle, and high schools in these districts have demonstrated excellence in classroom achievement but resources are needed to continue that high level of success. Since 1993, Wisconsin has instituted revenue caps, limiting how much a school district could increase its total revenues each year. Local referendums are now required to raise local property taxes for school purposes in four of the five public school systems in Door County and numerous other schools throughout Wisconsin.

What can taxpayers do?

  1. To obtain a long-term solution, all Wisconsin residents can communicate with their legislators that an improved state-wide school funding formula is imperative.
  2. To meet Southern Door and the Island’s immediate needs, district voters are urged to vote YES in the April 4 school referendums.
