Letter to the Editor: School Referendums Should Not Force Seniors From Their Homes

Seniors on fixed income should not have their property taxes continually increased to build new parking lots, electronic signage, auditoriums and enormous athletic facilities, especially when perfectly adequate and recently built, publicly funded gyms we’re still paying for are subsequently taken over for District Staff offices without any public input.

As a retired teacher, I believe we should all pay a basic tax to support public education, which benefits society. However, seniors and the disabled on fixed or low income should not be forced to pay for these constant referendums and bond measures that raise our property taxes exponentially, nearly every year.

The last three measures for construction projects that I did not support have doubled my property tax for the next 10 years. The most recent one increased my property tax by 25%, which is unreasonable for those like me, who live on fixed, low income.

The whims of athletic directors and administrators should not force seniors out of our homes. Give us the option to opt out of frivolous and expensive, unnecessary construction measures.
