Letter to the Editor: Stand Firm Against Quarry

I live in the shadow of one of the largest quarries in the world. I can see it from my front porch. Dust and more dust.

  • No open house windows in 40 years, and dust still finds its way into the house.
  • Dust on tables and countertops, car covered with dust every morning.
  • Blasting daily/gravel crushers.
  • Big trucks bouncing through town all day, everyday.
  • Potholes, resurfaced and rebuilt streets.
  • Shaking resident homes, ceilings and walls cracked and replaced.
  • Respiratory problems.
  • South Holland ordinance, no quarry trucks on residential streets.
  • Quarry has street sweep machines that go through town every day, gets some and leaves some, but mostly just spreads the mess around.

In the 40-plus years I’ve lived here, I have never witnessed any civic improvements accredited to the quarry.

Congratulations to the Sister Bay residents! Keep up the fight. Wipe the quarry off the map.

PS: I spend my spring and summer in Door County, where the air is clear.
