Letter to the Editor: Why Republicans Don’t Need the Filibuster

Why do the Republicans need the filibuster? All the Southern states have full and fair representation in the Senate. Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah and all ultraconservative states with almost no population each have two senators, so they are grossly overrepresented.

Southern states and ultraconsertative states are within a hair’s width of controlling the Senate and the legislation passed into law in this country without the filibuster. With the filibuster, they have dictatorial control over that legislation.

I can see why the Democrats from the large-population, underrepresented states such as New York and California would feel they need the filibuster, but why give it to the Republicans, who are greatly overrepresented in the Senate?
