Letter to the Editor: Women: A Call to Action

The stakes of this election could not be higher. Women have a vested interest in this historic election. There are powerful reasons to support a Biden ticket: Biden makes women’s issues a priority.

• Biden, as a U.S. senator in 1994, championed the Violence Against Women Act. This legislation has tough provisions for offenders, allocates funds for violence prevention and extends services for victims. Biden will make the reauthorization of this act a top priority.

• Gun violence is a public-health epidemic that hurts families and our nation’s precious children. While still respecting the Second Amendment, he will pursue common-sense gun-safety laws. Banning the manufacture and sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines will not jeopardize the rights of gun owners as intended by our founding fathers. He will support universal background checks for all gun sales.

• Biden also favors implementing a program to tackle the maternal mortality crisis among Black women. Maternal deaths are two and a half times greater for Black women. Expanded access to health care will be paramount in his administration. 

• Joe Biden is committed to standing behind the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This is especially critical during this time of the pandemic. The current administration has been working overtime to destroy the ACA. Biden will expand and improve the ACA. A Biden plan will repeal an existing law that bans Medicare from negotiating lower drug prices. That will benefit all of us.

Women have the power to restore decency, dignity and honesty to the White House. Ladies, let’s get this done. Vote Biden/Harris!
