Little Artists

With the help of the Tom “TL” Levenhagen Grant, Algoma’s early childhood and four-year-old kindergarten classes had the opportunity to visit Clay on Steele in November and work on a parent outreach project.

The hour-long activity was led by two Clay on Steele instructors, Kirsten Christianson and Paula Wendland. During the visit, the little artists started by making a pinch bowl and then were able to form it into a cat, dog, dragon, or any other creation they chose. Before they left, they put on an underglaze to make it colorful. The instructors took care of firing the pieces in the kiln. The kids took home their beautiful creations before Christmas.

Clay on Steele is a community art center based in Algoma that focuses on promoting the arts, specifically ceramics, by providing instruction, space for personal exploration and exhibitions.

Both Tom and Retta Levenhagen have been lifelong supporters of the arts including music, theatre and fine art. The TL Grant is in honor of their dedication to nurturing creative ambitions. The Algoma Elementary School thanks the Levenhagen family for the students’ creative experience.
