New Football, Baseball Coaches at Sevastopol

The Sevastopol Board of Education has filled the district’s varsity head coaching vacancies for football and baseball.

The board on Wednesday selected Dan Judas, a social studies teacher who also served as an assistant football coach for wide receivers and defensive backs and previously was the head girls basketball coach for the Pioneers, to replace Ron Frank as the head football coach.

Frank, a longtime coach who led Sevastopol to Wisconsin’s first eight-player football state championship in 2018, resigned following the 2023 season when the Pioneers went 0-8 overall and finished at the bottom of the Peninsula Conference standings.

The board selected Cody Leist as the head baseball coach to replace Jim Smasal after one season. The Pioneers finished 0-16 in the Packerland Conference last spring under the guidance of Smasal, who came to Door County after retiring as Kewaskum’s school superintendent and has a background in being a coach and athletic director.

Leist, who played high school baseball at Sevastopol and was also recruited to play baseball at Carroll College, previously coached the Door County League’s West Jacksonport Ports, leading them to four consecutive playoff appearances and one championship appearance.

For the past few years, Leist has been coaching the Sevastopol youth baseball tournament teams, youth Little League and currently coaches youth basketball.
