New Year’s Day Hikes

State park hikes. Submitted.

Begin the new year with a First Day Hike in three of Door County’s state parks. First Day Hikes are an initiative from the National Association of State Park Directors to encourage active outdoor recreation on New Year’s Day.

Newport State Park – Hike the 1.2 mile Fern Trail at 1 pm. Meet at Lot 3. After the hike there will be a bonfire and refreshments at the fire pit near the Lot 3 shelter building.

Peninsula State Park – Meet at the White Cedar Nature Center for a guided 1.5-mile hike beginning at 10 am. The 45-minute guided hike will take you over mostly level terrain with some slight elevation changes. After hiking, enjoy free hot chocolate and snacks and a warming outdoor fire. An all-terrain wheelchair will be available.

Whitefish Dunes State Park – A guided hike begins at 10 am at the Nature Center. Trail maps will be available for self-guided walks. Finish at the picnic shelter around a warm fire and enjoy hot chocolate or cider.
