Obituary: Bernice L. Hartl

Bernice L. HartlBernice L. Hartl, 98, of Sturgeon Bay, died November 24, 2015, at Ministry Door County Medical Center.

She was born June 6, 1917, in Antigo to the late Frank and Carrie (Place) Ingalls. On October 15, 1936, she married Frank Henry Hartl at St. Mary Catholic Church in Antigo. Frank preceded her in death on February 27, 1991. Bernice worked as a ship fitter “burner” welder in the Sturgeon Bay Ship Yards during WWII. She also worked at Amity Leather as a dye cutter, then at Leathem Smith Lodge and Door County Memorial Hospital in housekeeping, retiring at age 68.

Bernice was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. She was a quiet, kind, and loving woman. Mom was great at tending to her family, a loving grandma who always kept her candy dish full.

Survivors include her children, Betty Lou Lewis of De Pere, Eugene (Diane) Hartl of Sturgeon Bay, Sandra (Richard) Simons of De Pere, William Hartl of Sturgeon Bay, Dick Hartl of Sturgeon Bay; 20 grandchildren, (Don’s children), Donna Singer, Georgia Hartl, Teresa Hartl, Trina LeBlanc, (Robert’s children), Brian (Kathy) Hartl, Rick (Gina) Hartl, Mark Hartl, Colleen (Chris) DeGrave, (Betty Lou’s children), Becky (Pat) Verheyden, Kelly Lewis, Jon Lewis, (Gene’s children), Gena Pasquini, Jaime (Jerry) Brotz, Jonalee (special friend, Daryl Glisczinski) Hartl, (Sandra’s children), Tracy (Brian) Blahnik, Brett (Jeanne) Simons, (Bill’s children), Bethany Kipp, (Dick’s children), Casey (Aran) Hartl, Troy (special friend, Shelly Krueger) Hartl; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Katie) Hartl and Louis Smith of Idaho; and three daughters-in-law, Barbara Hartl, Judy (Glenn) Olson and Linda Hartl.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; two sons, Donald and Robert; daughter in-law, Eleanor (Papke) Hartl; grandson, Matthew Cory Hartl; two sisters; and six brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Bob Stegmann as celebrant. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 12:00 noon until the time of Mass.
