Recycling Conundrums: Electronics

Electronics cause some of the biggest disposal confusion when they reach the end of their useful life. Figuring out what can be recycled and what must go to the trash isn’t always easy, and when the shelf life of most modern devices is just a couple of years, it’s a question that comes up ever more often. Here’s a basic guide to local options.

Little Hoppers accepts most electronics at its drop-off site in Sturgeon Bay. A complete computer set (tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse) costs $30 to recycle, while laptops are $20. TVs cost between $20 and $50 depending on size, and stereos or DVD/CD players are $5. Cell phones are recyclable for free.

Additionally, Wisconsin has passed a new law banning certain electronics from the landfill. Once it takes effect September 1, Going Garbage will accept the banned electronics at its drop-off site in Sister Bay. To view the details of the law visit http://dnr.wi.gov/org/aw/wm/ewaste/.
