Scandinavian Nisse Carving Demo and Sale

People can discover Scandinavian Nisses and see Jerry Waite carve them from 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Door County Interiors & Design.

Waite’s appearance is part of an ongoing series of Arts Alive events taking place at the home furnishings and interior design resource store, located at 7266 Hwy. 42, about two miles south of downtown Egg Harbor.

Waite, a wood carver residing in Sturgeon Bay, said his grandson of Norwegian heritage got him interested in Nisses, and the whole idea just seemed to find a home in Scandinavian Door County.

Waite is inspired by folklore about the mythical creatures and carves Nisse ornaments from basswood.

“People believed that Nisses took care of their houses and animals and kept them out of harm’s way,” he said. “A Christmas tradition requires farm families to put out a bowl of rice pudding to please their Nisse.”

Waite thoroughly researched and sketched the Nisse before unveiling his carvings, and said, “I designed them so each is true to the folklore.”

During his Oct. 10 appearance, he’ll be carving Nisses, personalizing them upon request and perhaps painting, too.
