Sense of Smell Inspires Writing

Write On writer-in-residence hosts family-friendly program

Jude Stewart

Write On, Door County will host an Autumnal Smelling Tour: a creative program for families using the sense of smell as inspiration. Jude Stewart, author of Revelations in Air: A Guidebook to Smell, will lead the tour Oct. 29, 10:30 am – 12 pm.

The program will explore scents of the season – pine, cinnamon, hot chocolate – to evoke personal histories and emotions. Suitable for all ages, it will include a smelling tour of the Write On property as well as a discussion of the scents’ histories, symbolic and cultural meanings, and more. Participants will also make aromatic pomanders with fresh oranges and spices.

Stewart is the author of two other works of nonfiction – ROY G. BIV: An Exceedingly Surprising Book about Color and Patternalia: An Unconventional History of Polka Dots, Stripes, Plaid, Camouflage and Other Graphic Patterns – and has written about culture for The Atlantic, Slate, Design Observer and other publications. She divides her time between Chicago and Berlin, Germany.

The cost is $10 per family. Find more information about this program and others at writeondoorcounty.org. Write On, Door County’s Writing Center is located at 4210 Juddville Road in Fish Creek.
