Sheriff Department and Community Foundation Launch Crime Prevention Foundation

The Door County Sheriff’s Department has partnered with the Door County Community Foundation, Inc. to launch the Door County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Foundation. The Crime Prevention Foundation, a component fund of the Door County Community Foundation, will promote innovative programs and equipment that will enhance the Sheriff’s Department in establishing strategies to prevent crime and strengthen relationships with the community. Establishing a K-9 program is the first priority of the Crime Prevention Foundation.

The Door County Sheriff’s Department hopes to purchase a dog for a dual-purpose team. They are trained in patrol tactics which include tracking and area searches for missing people or suspects and in protecting their handler. As a second purpose, these teams also specialize in the detection of drugs.

The current goal of the Crime Prevention Foundation is to raise $25,000 to cover the cost of the dog, training, travel and additional expenses. The sheriff’s department is being aided in its fundraising by Leadership Door County’s class of 2017. Donors who contribute $100 or more will receive a plush police dog. Donors who contribute $1,000 or more will receive a visit from the K-9 unit for a photo opportunity at the donor’s place of business or home once the training course is complete.
