Southern Door Students Celebrate Farm to School Month

Southern Door School District joined schools, preschools, colleges and individuals across the Great Lakes Region states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio in celebrating both National Farm to School Month by crunching into locally grown apples on Oct. 23.

October is National Farm to School Month and the perfect time for celebrating nutritious local food in schools. According to the recent USDA Farm to School Census and the Wisconsin Farm to School Food Service survey, 55 percent of Wisconsin schools have a farm to school program. Farm to school is increasingly a proven strategy to support the economic and nutritional health of communities.

Southern Door students and staff in grades K-5 spelled out the word “crunch” while biting into locally grown apples donated by Cherry Lane Orchards and Kielar Akers. This collective crunch encourages healthy eating and supports farm to school and local food initiatives throughout Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region.
