Southern Door Students Donate Kindles

• Southern Door High School seniors recently donated three Kindles to the Door County Cancer Center at Door County Memorial Hospital in memory of a late friend.

The students made the donation on behalf of fellow student Brittany Denil, who loved to read but lost her life to cancer. Southern Door Student Council raised the money for the Kindles, presented by seniors Marie Foss, Carley Frea, and Chelsa Marin. Classmate Erin Baudhuin was unable to attend the presentation.

The back of the Kindles were fitted with heart-shaped plaques with the inscription, “Donated by the Southern Door High School Class of 2010. In Memory of Brittany Denil.” The plaques were developed and donated by T. Simon Jewelers of Sturgeon Bay. The students collected $877 to purchase the kindles and electronic books for the units.

Brittany’s mother Sherri, grandmother Janice Dantoin, and Cousin Ashley Dantoin were also in attendance when the Kindles were presented to the Cancer Center.

Sherri Denil said she wasn’t aware of the effort to make the donation until she was invited to the presentation.

“It was very special for these students to do something like this for Brittany,” Denil said. “We’re all very grateful. Brittany’s classmates all have hearts of gold.”
