Spider Expert Conducts Citizen Science Project at Newport

Newport State Park will host a couple Arachnid events in late June.

On June 28 at 6 pm, the lecture “Arachnids: Sexual Encounters of the Strange Kind” will be presented. Meet in the Visitor Center for this engaging presentation with educator and spider expert John Dobyns. Then if interest is piqued, join Dobyns in the field on Saturday to collect and identify the spiders of Newport.

On June 29, 10 am – 12 pm, learn to identify these spiders during the Citizen Science Program with Dobyns. Participate through hands on experience, learn collection methods and work with microscopes and field keys. Participants will also search for wolf spider burrows in the sand along the beach and explore the natural history, behaviors and ecology of these fascinating creatures.

This event happens in rain or shine. Participants should meet at Europe Bay Town Park. For more information call 920.854.2500.
