Stop WPS Scams

On the scam front, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) and law-enforcement agencies across northeastern Wisconsin are trying to protect customers from con artists by sharing the warning signs of utility scams.

Scammers are pretending to be WPS by manipulating caller ID to make it look as though WPS is calling, or by leaving messages that sound as though someone from WPS is calling. These scammers threaten to turn off energy right away and demand immediate payment, often by prepaid debit card, third-party apps such as Zelle or Venmo, or unusual payment methods such as bitcoin. Know that WPS would never do this.

Call WPS at 800.450.7260 if you have any questions about a call, email or text you’ve received. Learn about other warning signs at wisconsinpublicservice.com/safety/scam.
