Sturgeon Bay Community News: Sails Around the Bay Auction Garners $35,000

The Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center’s annual street art auction, Sails Around the Bay, was held Saturday, October 4. The day got underway with a new activity and opportunity for kids of all ages to be creative and “Chalk the Walk” along the waterfront. Over 72 entries took advantage of the sunny afternoon and chalked a variety of designs, shapes and colors.

The auction got underway at 7 pm with a good gathering of bidders interested in the 22 decorated sails. After a fast and sometimes furious bidding battle, all the sails were sold generating approximately $35,000 gross proceeds to benefit Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center’s promotions, programs and city beautification. The auction crowd also voted for their favorite sail for the People’s Choice Award; the results were a tie, with Emily Larsen’s “Without the Sun, I am Silent” sail and Gerald Richter’s “Lake Michigan Sunset” pronounced co-winners!

The Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center sincerely thanks major sponsors Baylake Bank and Stone Harbor, the sail sponsors, sail artists and all who supported the 2008 Street Art project and attended the auction. Plans are already underway for next year’s community art project and “Chalk the Walk” event which will be held on October 3, 2009.
