Sunset Cruise for Plum and Pilot Islands

The Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands (FOPPI) hosted its first sunset cruise of the summer July 15 aboard the Gills Rock–based Island Clipper.

Cruisers from both Washington Island and the mainland enjoyed live jazz saxophone music, food, drinks and a light breeze. Captain Charlie Voight skillfully piloted his boat through the waters of Hedgehog Harbor, Garrett Bay along Door Bluff, and out into Death’s Door to provide close-up views of the Plum Island range lights and lifesaving station, as well as Pilot Island’s lighthouse, before turning west to catch the sunset over the horizon of Green Bay.

All proceeds support the restoration of the historical maritime structures on Plum and Pilot islands. Visit plumandpilot.org to get details about the next sunset cruise, planned for Aug. 19.

FOPPI also hosted its annual meeting and membership picnic July 23 on Plum Island, which about 65 members and personnel from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service attended. Chris Voight provided transportation to and from the island on the Yankee Clipper.
