TAP Announces Cast for “The Gin Game”

Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP) announces the cast for D.L. Coburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Gin Game, running Sept. 8 – Oct. 16. TAP’s 2016 summer/fall artist-in-residence Drew Brhel is Weller Martin and TAP favorite Claire Morkin plays Fonsia Dorsey.

Humor and psychological warfare crackle over a card game between two quick-witted residents of an assisted living facility in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The residents, Fonsia Dorsey and Weller Martin bond over their shared dislike of their seedy nursing home and their enjoyment playing gin rummy with one another. But as Fonsia wins the games again and again, Weller is forced to choose between friendship and competition in this uproariously funny and poignant play.

Brhel brings his sharp wit and considerable resume to the role previously played by such greats as Hume Cronyn in its initial Broadway run, Charles Durning, and most recently James Earl Jones. Brhel makes his home in Milwaukee, where he most recently played Major-General Stanley in Skylight Music Theatre’s production of The Pirates of Penzance.

TAP’s own Claire Morkin brings her talent to The Gin Game, previously starring Jessica Tandy in the original Broadway production, with major revivals including Julie Harris, and Cicely Tyson as Fonsia Dorsey. This production marks Morkin’s fifth season with TAP and also a reunion with Brhel, who she previously worked with at Next Act Theatre.
