TAP Unveils Theater Renovation, New Musical

Third Avenue PlayWorks (TAP) is presenting the first production in its newly renovated facility: Gutenberg! The Musical! by Scott Brown and Anthony King. Michael Stebbins, Door Shakespeare’s artistic director, is making his TAP directorial debut.

Gutenberg! is a two-person musical spoof in which a pair of aspiring playwrights must perform a backers’ audition for their new project: a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud (Doug Mancheski) and Doug (Chad Luberger) sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, hoping that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract and fulfill their ill-advised dreams. Ryan Cappleman plays Charles, their pianist. An Oct. 6 pay-what-you-can preview will begin the run; opening night will be Oct. 7; and the production will run through Oct. 31, Tuesdays – Saturdays, 7:30 pm; and Sundays, 2 pm.
