‘Tension in the Ordinary’ at James May Gallery

James May Gallery (jamesmaygallery.com) presents Tension in the Ordinary: Winter Invitational, featuring Cristian Andersson, Melissa Dorn, Karla Lauden and Elyse-Krista Mische.

The regional artists in this diverse group deal with ideas of mortality, obsession and amnesia through multiple media, including performance, installation, drawing, fibers and painting.

On Feb. 8, 5:30-8 pm, visit the new James May Gallery Space, 219 State St. in Algoma, for a night of performance, art, conversation and refreshments.

Andersson works out of Matchbook Studio in Appleton. Although he primarily creates abstract oil paintings, in 2016 he started branching off into installation and performance pieces that deal with contemporary concerns.

Dorn works between painting and sculpture, drawing her subject matter from common, everyday objects and infusing them with humor.

Lauden’s work explores states of the conscious and subconscious mind. Her most recent work deals with surviving a life-threatening disease, so the images portray trauma, mortality, PTSD and living with a new body.

Mische is a bird aficionado, CNA, hospice volunteer and mixed-media artist who contemplates mortality, memory and time through her drawings, sculpture and performance pieces.
