The Old Cheese and Ale House Art Gallery Opens

The Historic Island Dairy will host an opening reception for The Old Cheese and Ale House Art Gallery from 4 – 7 pm on June 30. The inaugural exhibit, “The Era of Film,” features photographs highlighting the career of photojournalist and Washington Island resident Ronald M. Overdahl.

Overdahl’s career began in New York City, where he worked with The Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Heritage Magazine. He was also a photojournalist with The Milwaukee Journal for 37 years; his work in Milwaukee earned him two Pulitzer-prize nominations. During these years, Overdahl also received assignments from Life Magazine, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and The New York Times.

Overdahl was also named Action Photographer of the Year by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and twice held the title for the Wisconsin Associated Press Wirephoto of the Year.

The exhibit contains over 100 photographs including images of John F. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Johnny Cash, Marcel Marceau, Mohammed Ali and Bruce Springsteen. There will also be photographs of rural Wisconsin life.

The Old Cheese and Ale House Art Gallery is in the Historic Island Dairy at the intersection of Townline Road and Rangeline Road on Washington Island. The Historic Island Dairy was recently renovated into an art gallery with space for community activities after sitting vacant for over 40 years.
