This Weekend in Door County: Celebrations Across the Peninsula

It won’t be hard to keep busy this weekend! The Door County Fair is in town, offering visitors and residents a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Door County. Additionally, the communities of Washington Island, Jacksonport and Ellison Bay are hosting celebrations of their own. Also, be sure to check out the sampling of theater performances, farmers markets and outdoor activities highlighted below. 

Festivals, Fairs and Fundraisers

Washington Island Music Festival (Through August 9)

Every year in August, Washington Island presents a series of concerts led by Artistic Director Samantha George, violinist and professor of music at Lawrence University. World-class musicians donate their talents to the Festival, spending two weeks living and performing on the Island and establishing strong ties to the community. 

This weekend, head over to the Island for Inside Notes with violinist Samantha George (August 2, 10 am), an open rehearsal of Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in A Minor (August 3, 10 am) and a Sweet Sunday concert (August 4, 4:30 pm). Read more>>

Door County Fair (Through August 4)

Swing by John Miles Fair Park in Sturgeon Bay this weekend for BMX group demonstrations, pig and duck races, on-site wood carving demonstrations, a demolition derby, tractor pulls, a firefighter water fight, motorcycle races and much more! Read more>>

Enjoy live music from the Coors Lights Midway Music Stage by the Vic Ferrari Band, Forgotten Highway, Jason Michael Carroll, the Bittorf Brothers and The Modern Day Drifters.  

Cherry Fest (August 3, 9 am-4 pm) 

Jacksonport’s 25th Annual Cherry Fest will feature historical displays, a bakery booth, a car show (9 am-3 pm), fine arts & crafts, food, live music by the Modern Day Drifters (10am-4pm), children’s penny hunt (1pm), and more! Read more>>

Ellison Bay Goes Hog Wild (August 3, 3-8 pm)

Enjoy a pig roast on the waterfront, hosted by the Ellison Bay Service Club, and stick around for pizza, kettle corn, cherry pie, crafts, face painting and raffles. Live music will be provided by Copper Box from 5-8pm. Read more>>

Bring your dog at 3 pm for the “Best” Minster Dog Show. Ribbons awarded for: Best Wiggly Butt, Best Floppy Ears, Best Costume. 

Scandinavian Dance Festival (August 3) 

Celebrate Scandinavian culture and dance on Washington Island. Events will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church and Bethel Church. Read more>>

Adopt-A-Soldier Breakfast (August 3)

This all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast is hosted by the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department.  Featuring local items, silent auction items and music performed by Cristy Christensen, John Iverson and Last Man Standing. $8/person for ages 5 and up, proceeds benefit Adopt A Soldier Door County.  Read more>>

Tournaments 

Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit (August 2-3)

The 6th stop for the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit in 2019 will take place in The Bay of Green Bay via Sturgeon Bay, providing opportunity for a host of catching techniques. Daily live weigh-ins at the Lodge at Leathem Smith are free and open to the public beginning at 3:00pm both days. Read more>>

Pro Mini Golf Tournament at The Red Putter (August 3, 8 am) 

A registration fee of $30 includes 3 rounds of golf followed by a tasty lunch from the Mink River Basin. Participants must pre-qualify with a score under par. Par is 42.

1st place wins a trophy, $2000 cash, and the coveted Red Jacket. Read more>>

Family Fun

Family Drop-In Friday at the Peninsula School of Art (August 2)

Drop-in art making experiences for children and family members of all ages. A different medium is featured each week. Projects and instruction are adapted to individual age and skill levels. No pre-registration required. $15/person. Read more>>

Peninsula State Park Programs (August 3)

Two programs will be available this Saturday: “Morning at Weborg Point” and “Searching for Salamanders”. Read more>> 

Meet the Monarchs at Newport State Park (August 3, 1 pm)

Join the park naturalist as she explains all about monarchs amazing life cycle. See the active nursery and help release any monarchs that may be ready to go. Read more>>

Theater 

“Ghost: The Musical” (Peninsula Players Theatre), “Henry V” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” (Door Shakespeare), “We Like It Where?” and “Dairy Heirs” (Northern Sky Theater), and “La La Lucille” (Third Avenue Playhouse). 

Farmers Markets

Local markets offer great opportunities to support the local farmers, artists and small businesses of Door County. This weekend, check out Egg Harbor Farmers Market (Friday, 9 am-1 pm), Corner of the Past Farmers Market (Saturday, 8 am-12 pm), Farm and Craft Market (Saturday, 8:30 am-12 pm), Maplewood Farmers Market (Saturday, 2 pm-6 pm) and Baileys Harbor Farmers Market (Sunday, 9 am-1 pm).
