Up, Up and Away for Sister Bay’s Kite Day

Go fly a kite during Sister Bay’s second annual Kite Day! Join the Wisconsin Kiters Club on July 1, 10 am – 3 pm, for kite creation and a demonstration at the Sister Bay Sports Complex, 2155 Autumn Court. Kite kits for kids to build and decorate will be provided for free, according to Ellie Soderberg-Guger, marketing and events director for the Sister Bay Advancement Association.

“We’ll have a few more kites this year for the kids to decorate and fly,” she said. “There will be a little bit more of an emphasis on the kids creating their own kites and being able to fly them.”

Jeff Kuhns, a member of the Wisconsin Kiters Club, has been helping to organize Kite Day. Although he said he hopes the weather cooperates for flying show kites, the main goal of the event is to introduce kids to kite flying.

“Really, we will focus our efforts on helping the kids make and fly these smaller kites” that they’ll receive, Kuhns said.

He said the show kites, which are about 10 feet wide and 12-15 feet long, are inflatable and will be flown by members of the Kiters Club, weather permitting.

“Last year, we were unable to fly any large kites due to the fact that there just wasn’t a lot of wind, but the kids had a lot of fun making and flying smaller ones,” Kuhns said. “The plan this year again is to try to have the club attempt to fly some of the bigger kites in the Sports Complex, but again, we have to let Mother Nature dictate what’s going to happen there.”

Soderberg-Guger said she’s hopeful the weather will cooperate as well.

“As long as there’s some wind, which we’ve got our fingers crossed for, they’ll still fly some of their larger kites, which is always fun to see.”
