Washington Island Fly-in Draws 154 Planes

• The Washington Island Lions Club Fly-in drew 154 planes July 17. Over 154 planes registered during the event and 600 platters of boiled whitefish were served. Visitors also included over 40 motorcycles. Planes flew in from Ontario, Canada for the event and one pilot registered from Ohio. The aircraft included twins, experimental, a floatplane and sea-plane.

• The Door County Visitor Bureau reports that Jon Jarosh, Director of Communications and Public Relations, worked with six media outlets in the first two weeks of July, including 30West magazine and OnMilwaukee.com. The bureau saw 8,221 visitors to its lobby in June and had 6,124 visitor guide requests.

• The Sister Bay Plan Commission recommended the village board move forward with a proposed ban on chain restaurants at a meeting July 15 at the Sister Bay Fire Station.

The ordinance banning formula restaurants still requires approval by the village board to go into effect. It is uncommon for a village board to go against the recommendation of its Plan Commission. The board will take up the discussion at its next meeting Tuesday, Aug. 10.
