Washington Island Poet Reads for Dickinson Series

Alessandra Simmons (AlessandraSimmons.com) will be the featured poet at the Dickinson Poetry Series on June 12, 7 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County in north Ephraim.

In addition to being a poet, the Los Angeles native is a UW-Milwaukee PhD student. She’s lived in the Midwest for 10 years, in progressively more northern places, until she landed on Washington Island, where she grows veggies, native plants and flowers with her husband at Hoot Blossom Farm, selling to island restaurants and at the farmers’ market.

Simmons’ writing is concerned with the intersection of humans and the environment because she is fascinated by nature’s beauty and systems, but also because she wants her young son to have an inhabitable planet when he’s older. Her poems have been published in Spillway, the Florida Review, WomenArts Quarterly and other journals.

An open mic will follow the poetry reading, providing an opportunity for others to read their poetry; and a reception after that will allow guests to meet the poets.
