Whitefish, Potawatomi opened for deer hunting

• The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will make Whitefish Dunes and Potawatomi State Parks available to deer hunting from Nov. 20 – 28. The primary objective is vegetative and resource management. The DNR said over-browsing by deer has hurt forest and vegetative regeneration in the parks.

The parks will be open to the public during the hunt, with certain areas closed to hunting. Non-hunters are encouraged to wear blaze orange during the hunting season as a safety precaution.

• Gibraltar High School was named one of “America’s Best High Schools” by Newsweek. The Fish Creek school was ranked number 7 in Wisconsin and 691 overall based on college preparation in the form of advanced placement courses and tests. Only six percent of the nation’s schools made the list.

• The school board presidents of five Door County school districts met to discuss collaboration possibilities in light of the declining enrollment trends facing the districts. The superintendents of each school will attend the next meeting of the board presidents.

• The Sturgeon Bay School District received a Herb Kohl Enhancement Breakfast Grant of $2,410 to provide school breakfast. Food Service Director Sandy Andre hopes to use the funds to offer a universal breakfast (free to all students) to kindergarteners as Sunset School.
