Woodwalk’s Paper Shop Exhibits Vandenhouten

Dale Vandenhouten, a printmaker from Minneapolis has been making paper with watermarks at the Handmade Paper Center at Woodwalk Gallery, where his work is currently on display.

Using the traditional idea of a watermark, a logo sewn on the paper screen to identify the papermaking company, he expanded the concept by writing with matt gel medium onto the screen or sewing on bark or other natural materials.

When the screen is drawn through the paper slurry, the paper picks up thickly in the negative spaces and thinly over the gel or bark. When held to the light, the paper shows the “shadows” of the created design. Vandenhouten will go onto use these papers in printmaking.

The paper shop is open for students throughout September. There is still space open in the “Paper Intensive” class, September 14 – 18, 10 am – 1 pm. On Friday, September17 the shop will feature guest artist Kathy Bloomer who will teach her own method of recycling along with her beautiful papers, note cards, and envelopes.

The gallery and paper shop is located at 6746 County Road G, 2 miles north of Carlsville on Highway 42 and 5 miles south of Egg Harbor. For more information, call Kirsten Christianson at 920.559.0585.
