A Defense of Differing Worldviews

This letter is in reply to Diane Evenson’s letter to the editor in the Sept. 10, 2021, edition of the Pulse (“‘Saving Babies’ Won’t Get You to Heaven”). Although I would not qualify myself as “the smartest person in the room” (that’s quite the achievement, depending on who is in the room and who is doing the judging!), I wanted to offer a counter viewpoint to Ms. Evenson’s.

Ms. Evenson and I disagree on multiple things, but there is one thing we do agree on. She stated, “So stop voting like that will get you into heaven!” As a Christian who believes the Bible really is true, I agree that there is nothing you can do to get yourself into heaven and no work good enough to earn you salvation. The Bible is clear that it is only the grace and loving kindness of God that offer salvation, and these are found through turning from our naturally sinful ways and placing our faith in Jesus Christ. No person is capable of “earning their way to heaven,” no matter how many good and moral efforts we do.

In fact, that is a key difference between what the Bible teaches and what every other religion teaches! The Bible teaches that the work of salvation is done, completed by Jesus Christ himself, and we need only to believe (See Romans, Ephesians and Galatians). Every other religion points to human effort to somehow work harder or do more to please God, when it is simply not possible to do enough to cover the wide chasm between us and the Almighty Creator God.

Ms. Evenson also points out that she (and presumably those who agree with her) has a “more mature view of life.” I would only reply back that it is, in fact, possible to have a different worldview and still be mature, rational and thoughtful.
