“Artist, Friends, and Family”

To celebrate the summer season, the Blue Dolphin House and BDH Studio will be presenting a series of events showcasing the relationships artists have with friends and family. After over forty years of representing hundreds of artists and crafts persons in the Blue Dolphin House venues, it has become evident that these relationships have a significant impact upon the artists and their evolution of creativity.

Blue Dolphin House and BHD Studio are pleased to include watercolorist and mixed media artist Carl Mengert in the “Artist, Friends, and Family” series on Saturday, July 19 in the gardens. Joining Mengert will be aspiring artist Karen Johnson, who recently discovered the art of paper collage through the mentoring of Mengert. The duo will be instructing an “Interactive Collage Event,” which is open to the public free of charge, from 1 – 4 pm.

Door County resident, Carl Mengert, grew up and studied art in Milwaukee. Upon retirement in the mid ‘80s, Mengert returned to his love of art and began studying with area artists Bridget Austin, Lionel Wathall and James Range, who encouraged him to devote considerable time to watercolors. After studying with Ratindra Das, Mengert began to broaden his approach to watercolor and develop his own unique contemporary style. Most recently, Mengert has become interested in stepping beyond traditional watercolor, exploring other media.

Sturgeon Bay resident, Karen Johnson, has always been interested in art. Recently she has discovered the art of paper collage. With the mentoring of Mengert, Johnson has become fascinated with the many types of papers and combinations that may be utilized to create a collage.
