Boats and Art

The Door County Maritime Museum Classic & Wooden Boat Festival is making its annual call for entries for boats to exhibit, the Sikaflex Boat Building Competition, the “Paint the Bay” plein air art exhibit as well as contributing items to the Boathouse Sale.

The festival is scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 2 & 3 and annually features an assortment of vessels with judged awards for power, sail and self-powered boats. Festival attendees will also vote for People’s Choice award winners on Saturday of the show.

The Sikaflex Challenge boat building competition returns with construction on Saturday and the race on Sunday. The field is limited to 12 two-person teams. Again, participants are restricted in the amount of material and tools they can use during construction. Entry is $20 per team.

“Paint the Bay” also returns in 2014. Area artists are invited to participate in this popular plein air painting event beginning Saturday with artists spreading out along the shores of Sturgeon Bay. Works must have a maritime theme and be completed and returned to the festival grounds by 1 pm. A silent auction follows in the museum with proceeds going to the artist and the museum. Entry fee is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Registrations will also be taken beginning at 8 am the morning of the event.

People interested in donating gently used maritime-related materials or books (both fiction and non-fiction) to the Boathouse Sale are asked to call 920.743.5958.

For registration information call 920.743.5958, visit dcmm.org/events, or stop by the museum at 120 N. Madison Ave., Sturgeon Bay.
