Celebrate the Planet with Music

It wouldn’t be an Earth Day celebration in Door County without some music. After a successful inaugural event in 2014, Lost Moth Gallery will host its second annual “Love The Earth” concert on April 18, bringing in a variety of regional artists and poets to celebrate our planet through song and spoken word.

The concert comes just days before Earth Day, which as the name of the event suggests, inspired Lost Moth Gallery owner and local musician Jeanne Kuhns to make a call-out for environmentally-focused artists to make an appearance.

She sees the event as a way to increase awareness of environmental issues in an uplifting and comfortable way.

“It’s just a very non-threatening way to get together, talk about some problems and the strength of all of us to have the power to make change,” Kuhns said. “It’s got a positive feel to it because really what we’re trying to do is talk about what we can do, not what we can’t do. Small ways that we can make a difference – just being aware, just being educated, all of these ideas can be brought to people through music in a way that doesn’t feel like someone’s saying, ‘You’re stupid,’ or ‘You don’t understand.’ It’s a way of presenting a point of view to people so they don’t feel singled out.”

Kuhns invites the public to bring their own drinks and enjoy “an old-fashioned hootenanny” of local and regional musicians bringing their take on social issues to the gallery.

Performing at this year’s concert are: Mike Felten (Chicago); Jim Gary (Elmhurst, Illinois); Dorothy Zerbe (Oshkosh); and Door County musicians Holly Erskine, Early Thomas, Jeff Miller, Seth Raddatz, Holly Olm, Lori Wier, Jane Sommers and musical hosts Small Forest. A variety of genres will be represented, from folk to classical and country to bluegrass. Poets Ralph Murre and Sharon Auberle will also read at the event.

Between performances, guests will enjoy factual snippets on environmental issues along with discussions and stories.

“I feel a responsibility to honor Earth Day and to just put a shout-out into our Door County universe that Earth Day is important,” Kuhns said. “There are people here who care about it.”

The concert will be held at Lost Moth Gallery, 7975 Hwy. 42 in Egg Harbor. Doors open at 6pm for visiting, wine and snacks. Bring your own beer or wine. Concert begins at 7pm. The concert is free but donations will be accepted. For more information, contact Jeanne Kuhns at 920.495.2928.
