Sturgeon Bay’s girls soccer team opened the season Thursday with a 2-1 home victory over intra-county rival Sevastopol/Gibraltar.
The Clippers’ Shambo Wienke scored the first goal in the 31st minute, assisted by Alexis Olson. Sturgeon Bay maintained that 1-0 lead into halftime and through much of the second half.
Late in the second half at the 77th minute, Paula Wienke scored on a penalty kick to give Sturgeon Bay a 2-0 lead, before the United’s Sam Herrell scored in the same minute on a corner kick assisted by Eve Andreae for the game’s final goal.
Yarrow Goettelman made six saves in goal for the Clippers.
