Corner of the Past Opens June 14

The Sister Bay Historical Society’s “Corner of the Past” farm museum will open for its 12th season June 14 – 15. Hours on June weekends are 11 am – 3 pm.

The site features the original 1875 Anderson family farmhouse, saved from demolition and renovated by a group of dedicated local volunteers, and opened as the first project of the newly-formed Historical Society in 1997. The building features turn-of-the-century furnishings and a variety of artifacts.

Since its opening, the museum site has grown with the addition of a number of authentic farm buildings moved to the location for the surrounding countryside and restored. These include the Koessl Barn, which houses a variety of farm implements, a granary, chicken coop, a typical Door County migrant workers’ cabin and several log cabins. The machine shed is the site for an extensive display of period photographs along with a small gift shop.

More recent additions are a blacksmith’s barn and a summer kitchen. A working sawmill was dedicated in 2007. Landscaping on the property reflects a typical farmyard and kitchen garden, and the original lilac bush which once screened the Anderson family’s outhouse from view has been maintained.

Hours of operation will be expanded to include Fridays in July and August, and Saturdays will feature a morning Farmers’ Market and a wide variety of historical craft demonstrations.

Corner of the Past is located at the intersection of Hwy. 57, Country Lane and Fieldcrest Road at the southeastern edge of Sister Bay. Admission is free, but contributions to the non-profit society’s efforts are appreciated.
