DCAL Announces Artists of the Week

“Nothing Gold,” fabric landscape by Susan Hoffmann

M. Karen Shanahan and Susan Hitchler are the featured artists at the Door County Art League (DCAL) Gallery from June 3 – 10.

Shanahan, of Ephraim, uses watercolors to depict her favorite subjects – florals and landscapes. She combines positive and negative space to create interesting compositions. Shanahan credits Bridget Austin with influencing and inspiring her work.

Hitchler, of Oconomowoc, presents an array of unique jewelry creations using Kumihimo, an ancient form of Japanese beading done with fibers, beads, bead stitching and stringing of precious metal clay (pure silver).

Susan Hoffmann and Barbara Timmerman are artists of the week from June 10 – 17.

Hoffmann, of Oshkosh, “paints” Door County landscapes with fabric. Using collage and raw-edge appliqué techniques, she combines hand-dyed and hand-painted cotton to create representational landscapes. Hoffmann won the “People’s Choice” award for 2011 and 2012 at the Peninsula Art School’s Salon Exhibit. She teaches at The Clearing.

Timmerman, of Egg Harbor, paints the architecture of Door County and France. She endeavors to capture the charm of outdoor cafes and market places, as well as the architecture of quaint European villages and towns dotting the peninsula. Timmerman credits Bridget Austin and others at the Peninsula School of Art for inspiring her work in watercolor and acrylics.

The DCAL Gallery, open daily from 10 am – 5 pm, is located at the Top of the Hill Shops on Hwy. 42.
