DCAL Gallery Features Painters McDowell and Kenyon

“Canal Light” by Barbara Kenyon.

The Door County Art League (DCAL) Gallery will showcase the artwork of Barbara Kenyon and Dorothy McDowell from July 20 – 26.

Kenyon paints outdoors with a small group of artists weekly during the spring, summer and fall. Kenyon loves painting on watercolor canvas, and painting with water mixable oils.

“There’s an endless array of subject matter in the meadows, woods, old barns and buildings of Door County,” Kenyon says of her work. “People often comment when viewing one of my pieces, ‘I remember that barn!’”

“Silo Window” by Dorothy McDowell.

Kenyon studied at the American Academy of Art, took workshops with watercolorists Irving Shapiro, Lenox Wallace, and Ed Fenendael and oil classes with Rob Williams, Lori Berenger, and Emmett Johns.

McDowell is a member of the DCAL’s group of plein air painters. She is drawn toward painting in acrylics, and is particularly interested in capturing the character, shapes and textures of historic farm buildings and traditional fishing boats in their waterfront settings.

McDowell says, “My goal is to create a quality of visual drama. I edit shapes, use an undercoat of deep plum, and contrast strong darks and lights in my work.”

The DCAL Gallery is in the rear courtyard of the Top of the Hill Shops, located at Highway 42 and County F, Fish Creek. Hours for this season are 11 am – 5 pm daily and 11 am – 3 pm Sunday. The gallery is closed on Wednesday. For more information call 920.868.2288 or visit doorcountyartleague.org.
