Doc Heide and Lee Becker at The Clearing

American Folklore Theatre’s Frederick “Doc” Heide will be at the Jens Jensen Center at The Clearing on Thursday afternoon, August 14, to present “The World as I Found It: Songs of Doc Heide.”

In this “concert with Cliff Notes,” Doc and his AFT colleague, Lee Becker, will perform selected original songs from across Doc’s career, interspersed with interviews and in-depth discussion about the songwriting process and the nature of artistic maturation. Songs written for AFT will also be touched on. Participants’ questions will be welcomed. The price for attending this program/workshop is $40.

Doc Heide is the co-founder of AFT. The songs that he has written outside of AFT deal with existential, personal, historical and political themes. Some of these songs have been New Folk Finalists at the Kerrville Folk Festival and been compared to the work of artists such as Bob Dylan and Warren Zevon. He has taught for a quarter-century at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco, where he has won both the Master Teacher and Teacher of the Year Awards.

Becker has been with AFT for 14 years and is best known for roles such as Ernie the Moocher (Guys on Ice) and DNR Doug (Muskie Love). He and Heide are co-authors of Packer Fans From Outer Space and Belgians in Heaven, as well as a forthcoming musical about deer-hunting.
