Door County Arts: FHCA Presents Lecture in Conjunction with Landscape Exhibit

The Francis Hardy Center for the Arts (FHCA) will host an artist lecture on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4 pm at the Francis Hardy Gallery. Paul Lurie will speak about the technical aspects of his photography in addition to discussing which art mediums best capture reality or the artists impression of reality. Are painters better than photographers? Is digital better than film? Which medium does the best job: painting, digital or film photography? Which medium has the highest artistic and financial value?

Lurie is a fine art photographer and seasonal Door County resident who has extensively documented the importance of old farm buildings to the cultural landscape of Door County. His work has also just been published in a new book, Farmscapes 2008, which accompanies the exhibit.

The program is being held in conjunction with the FHCA’s current exhibit. “The Glories of the Door County Rural Landscape” is a stimulating photography exhibit that takes the viewer on an engaging and thought-provoking visual journey to explore Door County’s rural landscapes through the eyes of the artist. The goal of the exhibit is to use Lurie’s simple, stunning photographs as a platform with which to promote awareness – along with preservation – of some of Door County’s disappearing barns and farm structures which make up the county’s unique cultural landscape.

The program is free and open to the public, although donations are always encouraged. The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4 pm in the Francis Hardy Gallery, located on the historic Anderson Dock in Ephraim, WI.

Support for this program has been provided by an anonymous donor, Attorney Collin J. Dahl of Sister Bay and in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibit will run through October 13, 2008.
