Door County Distillery Wins Gold for “Best American Single Malt Whiskey”

The Fifty Best, rating the finest in wines and spirits, recently hosted an American Single Malt Tasting, where nine contenders were evaluated for the distinguished “Best American Single Malt Whiskey” awards for 2017. The Fifty Best announced on Feb. 10 that Door County Distillery’s Single Malt Whiskey was awarded a Gold medal. Using professional criteria, the pre-qualified panel of 18 judges blind-tasted the American single malts and rated them individually on a 1-5 point scoring system with 5 being the best. After tallying the scores, medals were awarded based on the judges’ impressions. Judges’ top comments about Door County Distillery’s Single-Malt included stating it was “smooth,” “mellow,” and “interesting in character.” One judge even commented that it, “Leaves me smiling.” This is the fifth major award for Door County Distillery’s Single-Malt Whiskey and the 30th award for Door County Distillery since it began entering competitions in 2012. Other notable awards for Door County Distillery include a Gold medal for Single-Malt Whiskey in the 2016 Denver International Spirits Competition, Double Gold medals for Vodka and Gin in the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and placing as a finalist with Gin in 2013’s and 2014’s Ultimate Spirits Challenge; the only North American Gin to do so in both those years. The complete ranking results, along with tasting notes, are published on TheFiftyBest.com.
