Door County Master Gardeners Offer Free Gardening Programs

The Door County Master Gardeners (DCMG) has announced the first two 2012 Continuing Education Programs.

The public is welcome to join the DCMG for a free program, “Think Spring! What’s New for 2012?” on Jan. 10 at 7 pm in the Collins Learning Center at Crossroads at Big Creek, located at 2041 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay.

Attendees will preview 2012’s newest annual, edible and perennial plant varieties and discover the New Year’s hottest garden trends. Kori Zawojski, co-owner of Sunnypoint Gardens & Gift Shop, will lead participants through a colorful variety of ideas, recipes, and tips. She will discuss different types of annual plants and explore their uses in creating fun and exciting planters and garden beds.

The DCMG will host a second free public program, “Lessons from the Commercial Garden – Maximizing Seasonal Displays,” on Jan. 17 at 7 pm in the Collins Learning Center. Caleb Whitney and Kristen Peil, owners of Green Side Up based in Baileys Harbor, will present inspiring ideas on how to expand the visual impact of existing gardens and how to push beyond the traditional growing season. They will also present a virtual tour through their local garden displays, breaking them down to help attendees better understand design theory, practical installation methods, and maintenance practices.
